Today is March 14th and the math nerds amongst us will know the significance of that: 3-14 is Pi Day!
To celebrate this annual event, I am making pie for dinner. I make a pretty lousy pie (still) and so I’m making Pizza Pie. Do you not know what I’m talking about? Maybe you’re not from New York or you’ve never heard Dean Martin sing “When the moon hits the sky like a big pizza pie, that’s Amore …” ?
According to this article Why is Pizza called Pie? “Pizza was first called pie when Italian immigrants arrived in the United States in the late 1800s. Pizza had similarities to a pie – with a crust, sliced triangle portions and its circular shape. Italian-Americans sold and popularized the pizzas, and the exotic dish picked up the English name “tomato pie”. Sometime thereafter the languages met in the middle to give us the term “pizza pie”.”
I’ve never heard of tomato pie and truth be told, here in Canada we call pizza pizza. That’s a well known chain in Toronto by the way. As is Pizza Nova, Pizza Hut, Pizzaville and Domino’s Pizza. Oddly enough, we do NOT have chain called Canadian 2for1 Pizza, which was very popular in Singapore. I’m not sure where that brand came from, but when I did order pizza in Singapore, I’d order there for patriotic reasons.

Canadian pizza is pretty much the same as US pizza. We like them thin crust, thick crust or stuffed and topped with cheese, mushrooms, veggies, pepperoni, peppers, etc. In Montreal you can order them ‘All Dressed.’ Everywhere else, we order ‘Deluxe’ to mean tomato sauce, mushrooms, pepperoni, green bell peppers and cheese.
To be honest, I prefer to make my own pizza. I like it thick crust, no sauce, fresh veggies, no meat and light on the cheese. Lately, I’ve been making this pan pizza from King Arthurs Flour, which was their 2020 Recipe of the Year. I make it exactly as written. Except for the no sauce, fresh veggies, no meat and light on the cheese 🙂

Happy Pi Day !
I use the Nan bread that I get at Costco for my pizza crust…tastes just like a pizza 🍕

Sounds like a good idea. I was looking at the Naan the last time I went to Costco, wondering how much curry I was going to make 🙂 I will try your idea next time.

Hi, Sandy – Happy Pizza Pie Day! We have a bunch of Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza shops in BC. But I do like the look of your homemade pizza the best. Yummy!

It must be a west coast chain that expanded into SG. It explains why I’ve not seen it before.

Looks tasty, although I like my pizzas thin crust, proper Napoli style! Ideally with sauce, mushrooms, maybe prosciutto and plenty of cheese!!

Still looks delicious but what is the classic pizza pie. Just a normal pizza?

To me, classic pizza is regular crust (not too thin, not thick) with cheese or cheese&pepperoni. It’s the pizza that’s sold by the slice in pizza shops & on university campuses everywhere. Entire generations of of students (mostly boys) , newly living on their own, have subsisted on pizza and beer 🙂

Have you heard of a closed pizza?

Never heard of closed pizza. We have calzones though, if thats the same? Calzone is a pizza that’s folded over and sealed so that all the cheese & toppings are on the inside. It’s like a giant hand pie.
