Friendly Friday Challenge: Two Ways

I love Amanda’s challenge this week for two reasons. 1) It’s a fun opportunity to play with old photos and 2) It introduces the Image Compare slider, one of the novel features of WordPress’ new block editor.

Amanda’s challenge is to present a photo in TWO WAYS – either the same photo with different treatments or similar photos taken at different times. I’m doing the former, in two three ways.

An easy treatment is to change color into monochrome. When to use one versus the other? It depends. It depends on the content, the mood I want to capture and the mood I’m in when I’m processing it.

This is a photo from my archives. As I was processing it, I remember thinking this was a picture with potential. I liked the curves and lines of the model’s face and I liked the clean line of her ear hoops. I liked the vivid blue of the background and the visual contrast to her skin tone. But I felt that it could be more. I converted it to monochrome to compare.

One of my favorite tools to play with photos is Nexmuse. It’s a free online tool which takes a digital photo and transforms it into art. I’ve forgotten which style I used but I really liked the effect on this picture.

Each image has it’s own appeal. I don’t know which is my favorite. It depends on the time of day I’m looking at them. What do about you, do you have a preference?

  7. Well crafted adaptations, Sandy. I notice more details in the monochrome version, like all the finer hairs on the side of the model’s head.
    The presentation of three versions is quite effective as well. I imagine that exhibited in a gallery.

    1. Monochrome seems to find more in a photograph, doesn’t it? Whenever I’m stuck with a photo, when I think there could be more than the obvious, I switch it to B&W and check it out. Sometimes it works.

    1. You have a good memory Mike. Yes, this is a photo from my archives. I’d shared them before and as I recall, you had a similar off-beat response. No, the woman was not dead. Nor had she had an lobotomy. She was alive & well when I saw her last.
