Street Art is defined as Visual Art in Public places. According to this article there are seven different types: Murals, Graffiti, 3D Grafitti, Poster art, Sticker art, Sculptures and Sidewalk Chalk art.
This week’s Friendly Friday Photo Challenge is to find one or more examples of the different types of STREET ART.
Here’s a short definition of each type followed by examples from my photo archives.
Spray Painted Murals – large scale pictures drawn on walls and colored with spray paint.
Graffiti – one of the most popular and oldest form of street art, going back to ancient Egypt and Greece.
3D Wall Graffiti – with creative shadowing and paint effects, murals appear to be popping out of walls.
Poster Art – is art which is printed or drawn on papers and then attached or hung on walls.
Sticker Street Art – made with eye-catching stickers of different sizes and posted on trees, lampposts, walls and benches.
Sculptures – are structures displayed on streets, typically with cultural, political, religious or historical significance.

Sidewalk Chalk Art – images drawn on sidewalks, sometimes incorporating imaging technique with physical form. I don’t own any photo examples but this video shows an artist at work.

These are so cool! Love the colors, sidewalk chalk art is my favorite, I think. And thank you for sharing information on different types of street art. It was nice to know them.

This challenge was great fun for me – it’s the first time I went out on an actual photo shoot since COVID. Seeing the difference in the street art between the Westside and the Eastside of Vancouver was a real eye opener. I love your Hong Kong shot, both the ‘art’ and the blur of the person walking by!

Coincidentally, on the same day that I published this, a local ezine featured all the new street art places in Toronto. Like you, other folks are taking advantage of this Covid ‘friendly’ way to go out 🙂

Street art is one of those things that started out as an amateur pursuit but turned into an art form. I love that it can carry a biting social message at times. Should be some interesting submissions, Sandy.

I like what street art says about a city and it’s art scene. For me it works when it captures energy and popular culture. No pretense of wanting to outlast history 🙂
