Friendly Friday: COMFORT FOOD

Logo for Friendly Friday Photo Challenge hosted by TheSandyChronicles and SomethingToPonderAbout

In Canada, a recent Uber Eats poll said that the top foods ordered for delivery included Butter Chicken, Miso soup, Fries and Shawarma.  It tells you something about Canada’s multi-cultural heritage. These are the foods of our families and our neighbors. They are what we yearn for when  isolated at home.  It is comfort food that soothes the soul and nourishes the heart.

For this week’s Friendly Friday Photo Challenge I ask you to share a photo, a story and even a recipe of your favorite COMFORT FOOD.

Along with your photo, tell me why it means comfort to you. Is it your grandmother’s secret recipe? Your kids’ favorite macaroni and cheese? Vanilla birthday cakes with sprinkles and sparkles? Or the first backyard BBQ that officially says Summer is Here!

For me comfort food is chicken noodle soup. Not soup from a can but soup made with real chicken and rich with Chinese flavors   It’s the soup my grandmother made with chickens raised in her back yard. It’s the egg noodles my grandfather kneaded and cut by hand.

Nowadays, when I make soup it’s with chicken from the supermarket and noodles rolled by my pasta machine.  Unless of course, it’s cleaning day and I find a packet of dried noodles stuffed in my kitchen cabinet.  Then I’ll  use whatever chicken I have in the freezer, simmer it with ginger, carrots, Chinese dates and shrimps and ladle it over the boiled noodles. A splash of soy, a grind of pepper and it’s grandma’s home cooking all over again.

I look forward to seeing your stories around your favorite COMFORT FOOD

Remember to include a link to this post and a comment below,  so that I and others can find your response.

I think I’ll have to write a post and describe these Canadian favorites. Shawarma is closer to you than you might think!!

    1. How do you like your chicken stew Neil? Is it southern style with dumplings? Pot pie with potatoes?
Growing up my favorite was ‘fricaseed’ chicken stew made with a deep brown gravy, tomatoes and allspice. Imagine my shock when Martha Stewart told me that it was ‘properly’ made with cream, egg yolks and white wine.
Goes to show that there are all types of this favorite 🙂

    1. It’s a soup which is a meal on it’s own 🙂
Your grandson’s photo is adorable and you’re absolutely right, comfort food has everything to do with the people you eat it with.

    1. Let me know when you’re coming to visit and I’ll make you some 🙂
This is very home-style and you’re unlikely to find it on Chinese restaurant menus. I found this out during my first year away from home in a foreign country. All the pizza and submarine sandwiches on campus couldn’t make up for it 🙂

      1. Even though we often crave “junk” food, I never get sick of good home style food. Often on holidays, I crave my veges and home style food, if we eat take away every night.

        1. Absolutely! and the opposite is true. In the face of weeks of home cooked meals, I’ve been longing to eat some restaurant food … but that was my last Friendly Friday post 🙂
