Friendly Friday: SOMETHING GOOD

Tell me something good …

I am not alone in wanting to hear something good on the news.  John Krasinki of Jack Ryan and The Office fame, recently launched a  YouTube channel SGN.  Every week he broadcasts Some Good News that highlight positive human stories during these times of COVID19.

For this week’s Friendly Friday Photo Challenge I ask you to share  SOMETHING GOOD that’s happened to you over this last month.

It doesn’t have to be spectacular or photogenically perfect. Just something special that’s given you comfort during these last few weeks of isolation. It could be something new that you’ve learned or something old that you’ve re-learned.

Like … The joy of baking bread and sharing the knowledge online.  I am an avid bread baker and recently I mentored a friend online, on how to make sourdough.  Her starter flourished, made beautiful bread and has now seeded a second generation of starter for a friend of my friend.

Like … Discovering to a new genre of music. In my case, it’s a cross-genre style that individually wouldn’t interest me but when pulled together, works. My favorite playlist now includes Tom Misch’s jazzy, R&B, hip-hop song “It Runs Through Me.”

Like … Reading something that made me smile.  Such as this case which began with a post saying “There are two dinosaurs, a person and a dog walking around Airdrie.”

    1. If the store’s had regular flour, I’d suggest a sourdough project where you don’t need yeast. But I suspect you have the same problem as everywhere else … a shortage of flour in general. Ah well. Maybe bacon ? Oh No! Just KIDDING! Leave your adorable piggies alone!

  1. Great post format! Love the patchwork-like data.
I have to try proper sourdough home-made bread. I’m just so bad with following instructions… That’s the reason why I’m better with cooking because it’s not so much a question of respecting a recipe.
    Have a great weekend Sandy.

    1. Bread baking is one of those things that get easier the more you do it. I learned to make bread 3 years ago. I’d bluffed my way into an intermediate level class & was surrounded by people who’d been making breads for years. Up to that point, my experience had been with a bread machine. After the class, one of the ladies said that she’d given up on everything taught in class because she felt more comfortable doing it her old way. I remember wishing I could be like that.

Since then I’ve made bread regularly. I’m so familiar with the technique, I never bother reading the instructions – just the ingredients and proportions – making visual & taste adjustments as needed. As a cook, I’m sure you do the same with recipes. You should try making bread again Vero. Maybe not sourdough because that takes longer to make the levain, but even a regular loaf 🙂

      1. I do regular bread every once in a while. That’s good but you can’t beat levain bread, right?! Let’s say it will be my goal to try at least once before the end of this bloody lockdown period!

  2. Ohh, this is such a great challenge prompt, Sandy! I love everything about it, your fabulous bread, and the tune! I added him to my playlist immediately. And that good news idea – still have to check out the channel – and the dinosaurs.

I collected the most happy-making images from the past week, including two heaps of books that spell out a poem. Be healthy and happy!

  3. The dinos are so cute! There is a lack of yeast here as well. There is really no shortage of yeast, just lacking in transporting it from the factory to the shops. I managed to get hold of some last time I went shopping for groceries. Used half of it to make bread and will problably make more bread this weekend. No photos as evidence though :).

    1. I read that the pandemic threw a wrench in the supply chain management. Normally there’s an up tick in baking around Easter and the suppliers plan pproduction for that. This year everyone started baking earlier in March and flour, sugar and yeast ran out in the stores. That was the reason for shortages here in Canada. I’m glad you were able to get some yeast. Homemade bread is so delicious

    1. This week alone I read 10 articles about more people baking bread at home. It seems to be a worldwide phenomenon. I loved your creativity with Carona man! Thanks for sharing
