Lens Artist Challenge #48 – Wild

re: Lens Artists Challenge #48 – Wild

The waves were wild on Wick beach.   From my vantage point on shore, I would never have gotten in. You gotta think this surfer was thinking the same.

These photos have always appealed to me. I’ve never been sure why. Something about them  reminded me of Japan.

Just after posting for the Lens Artist Challenge I figured out the connection. The pictures echo the The Great Wave print by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.  In Hokusai’s famous image, a rogue wave intimidates  a group of fishermen.  In these photos, the surfer is diminished by the waves around him.

Many thanks to  Tina Schell for posting a challenge that forced me to find the connection. And also, for giving me a reason to share them with you.
