re: Lens Artists Challenge #48 – Wild
The waves were wild on Wick beach. From my vantage point on shore, I would never have gotten in. You gotta think this surfer was thinking the same.
These photos have always appealed to me. I’ve never been sure why. Something about them reminded me of Japan.
Just after posting for the Lens Artist Challenge I figured out the connection. The pictures echo the The Great Wave print by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. In Hokusai’s famous image, a rogue wave intimidates a group of fishermen. In these photos, the surfer is diminished by the waves around him.
